The function of the general counsel - and in wider terms, in-house legal departments - has undergone a remarkable change in recent years. The profound changes to the role of the general counsel are reflected in a book – General Counsel in the 21st Century: Challenges and Opportunities – recently published by Globe Law and Business in association with the IBA, edited by Christoph H. Vaagt and Wolf Peter Gross.

The book covers topics such as the importance of integrating law and strategy, general counsel as an agent of business innovation, case studies on how in-house legal departments are transforming and the role information technology is playing in this transformation. Various contributors to the book, including IBA members Bruno Cova, Max Huebner, Chris Vaagt, Wolf Peter Gross etc, who participated in a panel discussion, facilitated by Jane Ellis, Director of the IBA’s Legal Policy & Research Unit, in London on 7 January.  The event generated considerable discussion and debate among the general counsel attending, who represented a range of industries and businesses. Eversheds LLP hosted a book launch party at its premises in One Wood Street, in London on Jan. 7, 2016. Access was restricted to General Counsels.
